So that universal shifter adapter I bought last week worked as well as expected, it didn’t! On top of that it damaged the shifter rod. See BMW in its infinite wisdom thought a threaded rod is too basic for their cars and came up with a stupider way to do it. Part of the system is a groove on top of the rod, and tongue on the knob that stops it from turning. Like this
Well because of the way the adapter clamped to the rod it actually closed up that groove abit. Which ment the knob wouldn’t go on. In MY infinite winsome I tried to hit it on with a mallet. And this happened.
II ended up using a flat file to pry the groove back open and did get it back on. Good news is that replacement e90 shift knobs are cheap.
It’s still blows my mind that no one makes a reasonably price adapter for BMWs to a threaded knob. Pisses me off. Also short throw kits for this car are not cheap either. Imma go buy a Honda

I think MINI uses the same mount. I need to look for a better knob for mine. The stock R56 knob really feels terrible in the hand.

Wouldn’t surprise me apparently BMW has been using it since the e46 at least.

Hey at least your shifter doesn’t have a GODAMNDBUTTON IN THE MIDDLE. Love this car but the M46 trans is WEIRD

I have always been glad the shifters on my old Impreza and my Accent we
re threaded...makes it easy to move it from one car from another when I get a new one
. It’s sentimental in a way -
I was given a very solid, comfortable
steel (maybe aluminum, but it feels a lot
heavier than that?) WRC ball-style shift knob by a good friend many years ago and it has lived in both cars and gained a wonderful patina over time! Both cars had different threads on their shift levers, but I found an adapter....here’s hoping it can live on in whatever my next car is (hopefully I can get one more car with a manual for a DD after this one before they disappear into the history books...)
In the 2002 Impreza just after I got it:
As of 2017 in the Accent...don’t have any more recent pics of it than that. :)

The cracked glass of the shifter actually looks kinda cool. You wouldn't be crazy to try and get a few more cracks in it to get a mosaic look.

Yeah I’ve always had threaded shifters and loved that I could change it up when ever I wanted to. I usually bought a new one for each car tho. Always wanted something that suited the car.

If it makes you feel better I too would have reached into the Drawer of Jeremy to fix that problem. Are older BMW knobs the same weird system or just threaded? E30 knob?

I’ve got a great way to handle this type of situation:

You could probably take it to a tool&die shop and have them thread it for pretty cheap. Might be tricky with that notch in the middle though.

I thought about doing that myself but you’d have to make it thinner as it’s quick abit thic ker than the typical m12. I think is 16mm. Idk how you’d get it down to 12mm without taking it off and milling it down.
